EU Recast Service Regulation

The EU's Recast Service Regulation (Regulation 2020/1784) governs how judicial documents are served from one EU member state to another. Documents coming from the United States follow the Hague Service Convention instead, which all 27 member states have joined. We handle both routes, country by country.

Every EU member state is a party to the Hague Service Convention, so documents from a U.S. case are served through each country's Central Authority. But the countries differ a great deal — in translation requirements, in whether they accept postal service, and in how long their Central Authorities take.

Between EU member states themselves, the Recast Service Regulation (Regulation 2020/1784), in force since July 2022, governs service instead. Whether your matter originates in the U.S. or inside the EU, we identify the correct route for each country and handle translation, transmission and proof of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the EU Service Regulation apply to a U.S. case?

No. The Recast Service Regulation governs service between EU member states. Documents coming from the United States go through the Hague Service Convention, which every EU country has joined.

Can documents simply be mailed to a defendant in Europe?

It depends on the country. Several member states, including Germany, have objected to service by postal channels under the Hague Convention, so mailed service may not be valid there. We check each destination's declarations before choosing a method.
